Cave of Generations
A fairly simple game but a good fit plus it’s free so you can’t complain about that! Great platforming and very satisfying shooting mechanic.
Gloom
Stamina based 2d brawler with souls like elements. This one is really light on the platforming so I would say it’s a loose fit. Additionally the encounters are randomly generated but they are essentially rooms, not full generated levels. Some nice minimalistic stylistic pixel art so make this worth a look.
A Robot Named Fight
This is a fun little twin stick style shooter that can be played with a controller or mouse and keyboard. Some fun platforming and a very very good feeling guns.
Overgrowth
Very simple randomly generated platformer with a shooting mechanic that allows you to double jump. Has quite a high skill ceiling but very little depth.
A Robot Named Fight
Metroidvania style game with some real depth. Comes highly recommended from a number of big gaming websites. Little bit of a loose fit on the random nature of levels due to the fact that it is just pre-created rooms randomly arranged but overall a very enjoyable close fit!
Dark Devotion
Seems like a fun platformer with some of the common meta progression stuff happening. Some of the combat seems like it might be souls inspired with heavy emphasis on timings. Nice animation and I’d say it looks very promising.
Noita
A pixel physics based platforming roguelite that looks like it will have some really unique mechanics.
Xenon Valkyrie
This a very close fit, a mix of mechanics from spelunky and rogue legacy. Great little game, very underrated and seemingly unknown.
Twin Flames
Not a ton of information out there about this one yet but it looks like a close fit.
Toy Odyssey
This one is a looser fit, has too much plot, but it has a similar structure to rogue legacy and even though the platforming feels bad, the art is really great.
Nongunz
A little simplistic but it has fun fast action and many roguelike features. Pretty good fit.
Meganoid
Very similar to Rogue Legacy with the progression, this is a very close fit with some very challenging platforming.
Flinthook
Very critically acclaimed, this is a really close fit with a slight twist on platforming that makes it less traditional but still super fun. The main thing that kills this is the level generation is straight medroivanvia box style with waves of enemies. Somehow it still has some cool exploration but the box levels are somewhat disappointing.
Badass Hero
This game is a looser fit, the levels are pure metroidvania boxes, admittedly cleverly arranged in comic panels. The game is a twin stick shooter with platforming which I consider on the edge of this genre, this one has a pretty strong emphasis on the platforming and roguelike elements so I have decided to include it.
Dead Cells
Super promising unreleased game with a great art style. Games is now released and I can say it’s a very close fit with great mechanics.
Towerclimb
A true spelunky like, hits all the notes and is amazingly fun. Maybe not quite as challenging as some of the other games but will still keep you entertained for quite some time.
Maddness of LE
Full Title: The maddness of Little Emma
Little rough around the edges but hits a lot of the notes. Twin stick style combat with metroidvania style random level generation.
The Dungeoning
Strong platforming in this one, the games can run a little long as the difficulty takes some time to ramp up. Dungeon features are a little lackluster and the game is fairly linear.
Tallowmere
Seems really rough around the edges but some people seem to really enjoy thisa one. Lack of invinsibity franes and no realy platforming challenged makes this somewhat a lose fit.
The Superfluous
Very close fit with a great setting and art style. Some squad based mechanics and a strong meta game reduce the permadeathiness of this title.
Spelunky SD
A two player overhaul to the original spelunky game for windows. This adds number of fixes and enhancements to the this amazing original game.
Roguelight
Awesome little free game created for a game boy style game jam. Hits all the notes but lacks depth.
Risk of Rain
Fast paced shooter style combact in an interesting if not super interactive generated world. Wave based enemies makes this a little but of a lose fit but it still meets a lot of our requirments and is a super fun game.
Red Rogue
Cool free little game ispired by rogue. Very simple so it lacks some depth and hardly has any platforming but still a fun little project.
Oblitus
Little bit of dark souls influence going on here with really challenging individual combat. Quite light on random generation and exploration with small numbers of area templates and and fairly linear progession.
Moonman
Another unreleased game that seems like it could be a great fit. Claims to have all the qualities plus some minecraft esque crafting and mining. Amazing art style is keeping me hopful about this as it nears release even if this might end up being more of a terraria style game rather than a strict spelunkylike.
Hets
Very similar to GoNNER, fast paced shooter combat in a minimalstic art style. Fun combat but very linaer and simple.
GoNNER
Quick gun base combat spread across very linaer but random levels. The game looks sounds and plays great but lacks some depth ultimatly.
Excavatorrr 2
Cool little mining game, somewhat of a lose fit, but its free and will entertain for a bit.
Doko Roko
Not a ton of information out there but this one looks promising.
Chasm
Game looks like it could be a close fit, unreleaed but there is a fair amount of info out there including lets plays on youtube. Seems to be a little metroidvania esqu in it’map generation. With a really great visual style this could end up being a great fit here.
Cavern Kings
Twin stick shooter mechanics make this a little bit of a lose fit on platforming. A solid loot system and a gook and feel give this game some legs.
Caveblazers
Really close fit with some very interesting companion mechanics. Bosses are really tough in this one and don’t have a ton of variety.
Aura of Worlds
Unreleased game, recently greenlighed. Seems to hit a lot of the notes but there is not a ton of information out there yet.
Ascendant
Beatem’ up style combat with a metroidvania style map leave the platforming as a little bit of a miss on this one. Pretty nice artstyle but the animations are a little rough.
99 Levels to hell
This game doesn’t have the punishing difficulty that many of these games have, it has a meta progrssion system as well which further eases the difficulty. Somewhat lacking in dungeon features and obsticles.
20XX
Turns out combining megaman X mechanics with roguelike elements was a really good idea. Loses some points for template based randome level generation that ends up showing you the same sections run to run quite a bit.
Tastes Like Spelunky
A really great mod for spelunky that is practically a whole new game with differen enemies and abilitys. This is a mod for the original spelunky so its note quite as nice visually.
Path to the Sky
A shooter at heart more than a traditional mario style platformer, but still a great fit. I feel it looses some points as well for being screen based rather than open area based.
Crystal Catacombs
Going for a more nintendo style graphics this is a losser fit but still hits a lot of points. Pretty decent gameplay but with a much more metroidvania approach.
Abyss Odyssey
This game hits a lot of the point and is published by a major publisher with high production values. The area it really fails in is permadeath, with multiple levels of meta progression and very nerfed permadeath.
Vagante
This game is another close fit with an amazing art style. The combat can finicky at times but the concepts are all there.
Rogue Legacy
Awesome game clearly inspired by spelunky, a heavier emphasis on the meta game makes it a little less of a roguelike but still a very close fit.
Spelunky
The namesake of this collection and the ultimate example of this new genre. Spelunky has these core features that define it:
- Random Levels
- Character Progression of any kind (items, levels or skills)
- 2d Platforming
- Permadeath
- Exploration
- Controller Support
Catacomb Kids
EARLY ACCESS
Catacomb Kids
An amazing game in the vien on Spelunky, in some ways a more traditional roguelike but all in good ways.
